  Return to Picnic Day History

 

  •  In 1909, the first ever Picnic Day was celebrated between faculty members and students.  Also, Molly the cow walked from Davis (then Davisville) to Berkeley for 97 hours.
  •  In 1927, the country Board of Supervisors petitioned the Picnic Day as a holiday but later denied.

  •  In 1935, 8 students rode on horses to Sacramento to invite the governor.

  •  In 1936, High School Bands had to camp on hay because there were no other available accommodations.

  •  In 1951, students pushed wheelbarrows to Berkeley for publicity.

  •  In 1954, fraternities and sororities were in-charge for clean-up.

  •  In 1972, the Weiner Dog Race was first introduced in the event.

  •  In 1987, the first-place float of the Alpha Phi ended up in flames.

  •  In 1991, the first body-building contest was introduced.

  •  In 2001, a sheep in the animal events area ran away.

  • In 2003, the Multicultural Children's Faire was introduced.
  • In 2007, due to unstable weather, the Board implemented the rain plan, which cancelled completely all outdoor animal events. As always, the parade still continued.

  •  In 2007, Non-Profit Organization Faire was introduced.

  •  In 2008, the title of Distinguished Faculty Member is introduced.

  •  In 2009, UC Davis is celebrating its centennial. Picnic Day has been selected as one of the three major events of the centennial celebration.
